The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

Australia will host the SKA Observatory’s low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The Finance Assistant will support the finance functions within the SKA Observatory by supporting accounting operations to meet legal and operational requirements. The Finance Assistant will be responsible for ensuring data is accurately and efficiently recorded in the financial ledger or supporting documents and will work closely with other members of the Finance Team to ensure that the monthly and annual accounts are reported on a timely basis.

Your duties will include:

  • Supporting the Accounts Payable function including new supplier confirmations and posting and matching of invoices
  • Running the weekly payment runs, associated payment postings into financial ledgers, and bank reconciliations
  • Assisting with managing and updating the fixed assets register, including the initial capitalisation of assets and monthly depreciation
  • Assisting with the month-end accounts, such as posting month-end accruals journal, prepayments journal, depreciation journal
  • Assisting in month-end group consolidation management accounts

Location: Perth, Western Australia
Salary: AU$51,031 - AU$65,779 plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Three-year Term appointment – Full-Time or Part-time (possibility of extension upon completion of studies)

To be considered you will need:

Essential 

  • Commenced, in progress or completed undergraduate university studies in accounting or a related field
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to keep accurate records
  • Experience of organising records and data to ensure that information can be traced efficiently
  • Able to take ownership of allocated tasks, awareness of how to prioritise given tasks, manage time efficiently, communicate progress and meet deadlines
  • Strong ethics, with an ability to manage confidential data
  • A self-motivated team player who is flexible and adaptable to change

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of financial and accounting procedures
  • Knowledge of financial regulations
