Centrelink’s giant welfare payments IT overhaul is complete, after seven years and more than $1.58 billion spent.

Services Australia has announced the end of its massive welfare payments infrastructure transformation (WPIT) overhaul.

The agency has been working since 2015 to replace decades-old legacy systems like the country’s income security integrated system (ISIS).

However, work on one of two major elements - the Entitlement Calculation Engine (ECE)-– is not complete, and will quietly continue until at least September due to unforeseen delays.

The ECE solution involved rebuilding the existing solution and decoupling the business rules from ISIS. It will be used to work out the eligibility of welfare recipients to different entitlements, and how much to pay them.
