Australia Post has launched its Digital MailBox service, allowing customers to receive and pay bills, communicate with their providers and store important documents such as passports and birth certificates.

At the launch earlier this week, Australia Post announced that Tekstra, AMP and Westpac have all signed onto the service.

ANZ, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Link Market Services, National Australia Bank and Yarra Valley Water will all use the Digital MailBox as part of their suite of communications channels to connect with their customers. Australia Post will also use the MailBox to securely communicate with its employee base of more than 30,000.

The Digital MailBox forms part of Australia Post’s $2 billion expansion, modernisation and digitsing of its national communications and delivery network.

Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, said that the service forms a crucial step towards forming a modern economy.

Senator Conroy also announced that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) were both partnering with Australia Post to explore opportunities to use the service.

"One of the Government's National Digital Economy Strategy goals is that by 2020, four out of five Australians will choose to engage with the government online.  The new Australia Post Digital Mailbox is an excellent example of the kind of service that will enable the achievement of that goal," Senator Conroy said.

"Both businesses and Government agencies are realising the potential of new platforms such as the Australia Post Digital MailBox to open up a trusted new avenue for communicating and transacting safely online," Australia Post CEO and Managing Director Ahmed Fahour said.

The Australia Post Digital MailBox will allow Australians to:

  • Connect with service providers they have a relationship with - such as banks, utilities and government entities.
  • Receive statements and bills, set reminders and make payments online, using any internet enabled device, such as a tablet, PC or mobile device, anywhere, anytime.
  • Use the Australia Post Digital MailBox as a personal digital vault to upload and easily find important documents such as passports, birth certificates and drivers' licences.
  • Business can use the MailBox to complement their existing physical and digital communications channels at a fraction of the cost of physical mail.
